Flemish E-government Manager, Geert Mareels was invited by the Association of Local Government Information Management to give a presentation at the 34th International ALGIM Conference entitled ‘Smarter Local Government’, which was held on the 24 - 26 November 2014 in Auckland, New Zealand. It was an opportunity to hear and see the latest innovations being undertaken by Local Governments as well as discuss upcoming trends in and opportunities of public sector digitization.
Geert presented Citadel solution to delegates, speakers and vendors from all around the globe including United States and Canada. He highlighted the importance of the Open Data, Mobile Applications and Common Data Formats as main drivers for successful Smart City which, against the common view, does not need to be an expensive innovation. After 3 years of running the project, Citadel team developed free and easy to use tools that are applicable to any city in the world. From now on, Cities (and villages) don’t have to invest in building their own mobile apps, just publish their data following the “Citadel standards”. Developers can build apps with potentially every EU citizen as a customer whereas citizens don’t have to download the same apps for each city they visit. All this is possible with the Citadel new App Templates, Dataset Converter, Application Generator Tool and Whitepaper which provides guidance for opening and using data. As a result of the conference the number of Associate Cities increased significantly. However, there is still room for more countries and cities!
